Elizabeth von Arnim was a British author and Countess best known for writing semi-autobiographical works that served as satirical commentaries of European society during her time.

The Princess Priscilla Fortnight Elizabeth von Arnim 9781522894971 Books

I collect books by Elizabeth Von Arnim, always a witty, perceptive, tone-perfect author, who can skewer the prejudices and foibles of men toward women and women toward men and the society into which they were born. I like these books most in their original cloth editions, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was somewhat disappointed that The Princess, a novel previously unknown to me, arrived in shiny new board covers as a reprint, though photographed from the original edition.
Although a bit arch at its beginning, the story develops with Elizabeth's always graceful writing and delicious comments on the wayward young princess who refuses to be seduced by the frippery into which she was born, and strikes out on her own, with the royal tutor who adores her.
New readers of Elizabeth, as she signed herself, might be advised to begin with Elizabeth and Her German Garden, the book that made her famous, or with one of her novels made into a lovely film, The Enchanted April, but for those who can never get enough of he writer who was called "one of the three finest wits of her day," The Princess Priscilla's Fortnight offers additional delight.

Love this book.
This book was delightful from beginning to end. I love the writing style of Elizabeth and the story was very believable. It seems exactly like what I would expect to happen to someone who was a Princess and then suddenly out in the world on her own. I especially enjoyed seeing Priscilla's slow realization that things were not going to go the way she expected.
A very unusual book beautifully written and with strange twists and turns. I am not certain that it is a 'four star ' but to give it only three would be mean. Read it and decide for yourself. Moving.
After reading - and thoroughly enjoying - The Enchanted April, I wanted to read more by Elizabeth von Arnim, so I ordered Princess Priscilla's Fortnight. It was absolutely delightful! Von Arnim's characters are so vibrant, and her language is unique. I found myself laughing out loud as I journeyed along with Priscilla and Fritzi on their adventure. I gave the book to my parents, and they both thoroughly enjoyed it as well. A real hidden gem!
The princess and her teacher decide that they want to lead a simpler life, away from the opulence of palace life. They escape to a cottage in the country, but find that it is not as idyllic as they had hoped. They manage to upset the lives of the people in the little village, just by being there. It is a lot harder to be poor and good than they had expected.
Want a good read with plenty of plot twists? You couldn't do better than this!!! Originally penned about a century ago, it's a wonderful adventure that keeps us laughing and wondering what in heaven's name will happen next!!

Superb!! One of our favorite authors.
I think some of the reviewers have missed the point of this tongue-in-cheek tale of Princess Priscilla and her big adventure. Von Arnim is masterful in her depictions of human nature. Her characters are subtly and entertainingly set forth. Full of high ideals, good intentions, and shocking naivete, they blunder through one mishap after another in their ill-conceived but well-meaning schemes. The author can (and does) turn a phrase throughout this tale in ways that are truly laugh-out-loud hilarious. The writing style is reminiscent of "The Princess Bride" (if one has read the book, not just seen the movie), full of understatement and irony and twists of a phrase. If that sort of humor appeals to you, this is a book not to be missed. Since it's free for , give it a try. Everyone on whom I have urged this humorous tale has found it delightful and thoroughly entertaining--not one has said, "Bosh." (as the prince did in the book) Ten stars!
